I have minimal experience (I helped out my mom who managed apts) in the apartment industry. I was a weekend rental agent about 20 years ago. I was territory sales rep in the retail industry, an elementray school teacher; and a realtor (part time while on family leave for 2 years and loved it) ...the crash sent me running back to teaching. I would love to become a least consultant and I'm just wondering what the typical benefits/compensation would be. Can/should I negotiate rent for an apartment at the complex? Is there typically room for advancement? I have spoken to one management company who is considering hiring me and they want me to have a realtor's license. What is a fair commission package for a leasing consultant? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am seeking employment in the Philadelphia/Montgomery County, PA area. Thanks for your help.

Hi Pamela,
I don't know if I can answer all of your questions, but take a look at the salary survey we published. It has base salary and salary plus bonus figures for a leasing consultant, even by region. Here is a link to download: www.multifamilyinsiders.com/apartment-fo...salary-survey-report

One quick note about having a realtor's license, I could be wrong, but I believe there are some states that require that by law. But again, I might be wrong, so check with someone else.

Hello Pamela,

Compensation usually depends on the property management company. I work as a temp and make $14.00 an hour plus $40.00 per move-in.I know someone who used to work at a large apartment community who was making $15.00 an hour and $100.00 per successful move in and getting a rent discount. The typical rent salary for the Philadelphia region is between $12.00 and $17.00 an hour depending on how large the apartment community is.
