Top 10 Opportunities that Social Networking Offers

Top 10 Opportunities that Social Networking Offers

The Internet connects us like no other medium, and social networking sites are a great way to stay in touch and turn connections into business. Here are the top ten opportunities that social networking offers and why you should stay connected in 2010:

1.     Spread a consistent message/image to a large audience about your brand, identity, and products/services

2.     Meet people in your industry, find employees and employers, ask for referrals, and get/give advice

3.     Put a "face" on your business and show your corporate personality

4.     Help build your website's search engine ranking by cross-linking on all sites and optimizing media assets (the more quality links to your site, the better!)

5.     Compliment your existing online and offline presence (Do not replace them)

6.     Provide helpful, relevant information that is useful to the masses

7.       Turn your new and existing customers into repeat customers and fans

8.       Target specific demographics/industries/companies by using proper and consistent keywords/phrases for your audience

9.       Promote your events, promotion and specials to a wider audience

10.   Elevate your customer service to a new, transparent level

Erica: Great piece. Wondering - do you guys still use MySpace much? In my region, most of the industry has gotten away from MySpace, so I'm wondering if this is a regional thing? Your thoughts, as its #2 on your list.

Daisy- Thanks! We actually still use MySpace everyday believe it or not. We continue to friend, post blogs, post to the bulletin and all. MySpace is consistently delivering guest cards to our advertisers month after month. MySpace was the top social media web site that referred leads for our advertisers for majority of 2009 with Facebook coming in second. I think for an ILS, MySpace is critical because we are trying to reach such a stretched demographic on a nationwide level as opposed to a single apartment community. So I think your point about MySpace being a regional thing could be very valid.

Let’s take a look at MySpace’s demographics:
MySpace skews more female at 57% while the other 43% are male. The sweet spot for age is between 13-17 and 18-34. MySpace users are predominately less affluent with majority of their total household income being in the $0-$30k and $30k-$60k range. 57% of MySpace users have no college degrees.

Let’s take a look at Facebook’s demographics:
Like MySpace, Facebook skews more female at 55%. The sweet spot for age is also between 13-17 and 18-34. However, 35-49 is also a popular age group. Facebook attracts a much more affluent demographic. The more popular income runs from $60k-$100K and $100K+.

MySpace.com’s demographics align nicely with ForRent.com’s demographic. After doing a comparative analysis of all of our competitors, ForRent.com attracts the youngest audience which makes MySpace a natural fit. ForRent.com also uses social bookamring on the site for users to share their favorite listings to their social media profiles and MySpace used to blow Facebook out of the water when comparing the total shares but just in the past 6 months, Facebook has caught up. With that being said, my predications for 2010 are that Facebook will deliver more leads to our advertisers. However, I would strongly...
