Hour Early Initiative Challenge

Community Managers can sometimes become overwhelmed with all of the day-to-day functions in operating a community. In order to operate a property successfully, Managers must be organized, know how to delegate responsibilities, and communicate with their staff effectively to meet various goals for the property.

I would like Community Managers to join in and take the "Hour Early Initiative Challenge". The goal of this challenge is to create a stress free work environment for Community Managers and their staff. Community Managers will:

1. Take the Initiative to come in to work 1-Hour Early - Don't worry about pay on this hour. Love what you do and care about your community.

2. Make A Checklist and Organize Your Day - We sometimes forget the simple things that can help us make it through the day. A checklist is a simple way to write it down and check the task off as it is completed.

3. Strategize - Think about how effective tasks can be done. Can we handle this better on M, T, W, TH, or F?, etc. Knowing what time of day your office has less traffic is a good way to strategize to complete tasks.

4. Delegate - Delegate various tasks to your Asst. Manager and Leasing Agent(s). Leasing Agents can perform many duties when they are not handling existing residents, future residents, or making calls. Asst. Managers should be handling the majority of the day-to-day functions.

5. Take Action - Just Do It! Complete everything on your list. No exceptions.

6. 30-Minute End of the Day Follow-Up with Staff - Take 30 minutes to talk with your staff at the end of the day to make sure all tasks are completed. Ask them about their thoughts and let them know that you appreciate them.

In this hour, Community Managers should take this quiet time to have that cup of coffee or tea and really analyze their priorities for the day. This challenge creates a more relaxed environment for Managers as well as the staff. You are at work on time and you have your duties and thoughts planned out for the day.

Leave your comments and let's share ideas on how effective this challenge was for your community.

Great blog, Charisse, and although I'm not sure if I'm on board with the "working for free" aspect, I do love your notes about creating a plan of attack. I've found that my productivity significantly improves when I have a to-do list, with the highest priority items highlighted. Generally, that list has both normal to-do's on it, as well as opportunities to add something new and innovate.
