Apartment Focus Word for Today-Consistency

Consistency is a solid word that digs deep into many job functions each day.  I like this aspect of the definition: “The achievement of a level of performance that does not vary greatly in quality over time.”  That rings with a nice tone doesn’t it?  Consistency can be a challenge since we have so many distractions around us that interfere with that “quality” effort we want to put forth.  However when we can make it a focus word it certainly helps us achieve the goals we want to reach.

Often times we have numerous grandiose ideas that we want to see work.  How about a team of Nanites that can cover an apartment turn in less than 30 minutes after a moveout?  A cool idea but not one that is realistic.  Whatever ideas we come up with to make apartment operations better they need to be ones that all can be on board with and are willing to be consistent to make them produce the desired results.

Here are five points that I came up with that need to have the word “consistent” attached to it.

  • I will be consistent in how I treat my team members.  No one will get more or less from me but will see a consistent approach to how the office functions
  • I will be consistent with maintenance requests.  Each request will be given fair attention and each resident will consistently be communicated with on an equal basis.
  • Our outreach program whether digital or traditional will be consistent so that my residents can depend on it.
  • I will be consistent in the application of the Fair Housing Act.  The law will assist me in providing an equal opportunity to all potential residents.
  • Being consistent to me does not mean dropping an initiative after one month but allowing a reasonable timeline to measure anticipated results.

Those were just a few that popped into my mind.  Now I want to turn it over to you.  In what aspects of daily apartment operations do you feel consistency is necessary?  Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Good post, Jonathan. Our business demands consistency in so many areas - not just because of the threats of lawsuits, but because we sell a product that can be so easily reviewed, shopped and shared with others. Things like unit access, mandated notices, lease renewals and more should all be looked at through the lens of consistency.

Nice Blog... Consistency with training... that is something many properties drop first when there are money issues.

Thanks Chrissy. Valid point and something I of course see all the time. It's unfortunate. The brain thrives on repetition and repetition increases performance. Training is an important item to be consistent on.

I think everyone should remain consistent with marketing. Sometimes we get so busy working with new clients, residents, and vendors that the week may pass without reaching out to our community and traffic drivers. Even when our properties should continue to drive in traffic and work a waitlist.

Thanks LDavis. Excellent point regarding marketing. There definitely needs to be a solid consistent pattern to our marketing strategy. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
