What a Blog Really Is

What a Blog Really Is

I recently heard Kristen Steiner,  account manager extraordinaire explaining blogs to a group of middle aged men, who obviously weren’t getting it.  The light bulbs went on when Kristen profoundly described it this way – “Blogs are like cocktail party white papers,” she said, “you have a brief and relevant conversation and then you move on.”

Priceless.  And right on spot.

Bloggers, if your readers have to stop in the middle of your post to refresh their cocktails, you might want to think about shortening it up a bit.

Jonathan - I think a good test is to read a few blogs with this question in mind. When you find your mind wandering or your interest level decreasing, you've hit the point. Then just copy and paste into Word just to count the characters/words. Of course, the mind wandering might actually mean that they have inspired you and your mind is now brainstorming that new thought. So maybe that isn't a fool-proof way to figure this out...

Bingo! Some people's writing style leaves me bored after the first few sentences, and others make me beg for more.

Great comments. It is not so much about specific word count as staying relevant and on point. I learned a good rule of thumb years ago - write your blog, set it aside for awhile, come back and cut it in half. I find it works exceptionally well. I just cut two sentences out of this commentary and the message did not suffer for it.
In addition, keep in mind time constraints of your reader. Your goal is to have your blog read now, to provide inspiration and dialogue. If its length dictates later review, it might need some condensing.
