The Golden Rule of Interviewing

The Golden Rule of Interviewing

Hiring the Golden Rule Way!

The Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like to be treated" makes smart business sense.  As business leaders we have specific expectations on how we treat our clients, but do we apply that rule to our prospective employees looking for apartment jobs also?  Unfortunately, most of the time, we act as if it is a privilege to be interviewed. I have seen people interview potential employees and treat these candidates with absolutely no respect.   When interviewing we need to remember that the candidate is also interviewing us.  A talented candidate has choices.  They don't have to take the job if it is offered.

The expectations that we have for candidates during interview should also be applied to the interviewee.  We all have clear cut rules for our interviews such as: candidates must arrive on time, they must not be negative about their previous employer or company, they must be prepared, etc.  Think about this, if you were set to interview with a candidate and you arrive late, breeze in, sit down, complain about all the work you have to do, don't look your best, and then knock the former employee, you are sending a clear message to the person you are interviewing that this is acceptable behavior for your employees.  A person who finds that acceptable will be the one doing that in the future.  These traits are not what most people want in an employee.

We spend 10's of thousands of dollars a year on trying to locate people that would be an asset to our company.  Use your money wisely, treat people well when they interview, grant the candidate your full attention, extol the virtues of your company, and finally if you decide not to hire them send follow up notes or emails to let them know that you have chosen another candidate, they will in turn refer people to you.  These concepts are not new to us, these tips are taught everyday so that we keep our residents, attract resident referrals and in general close on the prospect.

Be smart, start attracting higher caliber candidates to your company the Golden Rule way!

Great advice Shelby! I feel like the level of professionalism in our industry has improved over the years, but I'm still amazed at the attitude of some people and companies who think the world revolved around them. Luckily, the better people and better companies are able to distinguish themselves from those and further separate from the rest of the pack!
