The Road to Hell...

Everyone remembers the old adage: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions", right?  If you work on site, then you know this adage all too well.  Fair housing, too many projects scattered unfinished, tough resident expectations, etc... we get it all.  You know the drill... You think you're doing the right thing only to receive a corporate lashing, resident firing squad or the sleepless night that follows and unending list of "To-Do's" and "Urgents".

Sitting at Brainstorming right now and still trying to get office work done, I think I'm not in the minority here when I say that I am trying to do a lot of things and unfortunately, I don't think I'm doing all of them well enough.

Get honest people.  How many managers out there have a Facebook page?  How many of you are honest enough to admit that it's not a good one?  Put me in that category!  It's not for a lack of effort, truly.  I try, but can't create more hours in the day and I need to learn more to play the game better!   And this is only one example.

Are you a manager who would rather just do it yourself then delegate it and risk having it done incorrectly?  Or just not to your liking?  What about feedback?  Have you neglected giving completely warranted feedback  to a staff member just because "It's not a good day for this..."?

What about the resident who asks for the extra day on their illegal car in the lot because their company layed them off and you're rewarded with get another 20 voicemails from residents demanding the same leeway.

Let it go.  As I am sitting in a room with all of these fabulous people, the common theme that seems to strike me the most is that there is a LOT that I don't know.  I endeavor to learn and to stay updated, but there is a ton of stuff out there people.  The key is just what Toni Blake missions: "You don't always need to know.  But know the people who know."

Start asking for help.  Find mentors and ask them to do what they do best - teach you!  Be willing and accepting of the fact that there needs to be tiers to your expectations.  Plan out your time and your abilities and pick a few things to master instead of being "just ok" at a lot of stuff.

Specialize.  Pick a team of specialists that creates a comprehensive whole.
Become the leasing guru that blows away the competition.
Endeavor to become the leadership that you want to see in the world.
Create the social media manager position that we all know is coming down the pike for every company in our industry.  It's coming and get in front of it now!

OR just plot out the time to come to Brainstorming now... and figure out where your good intentions can instead lead to the road of professional development, empowerment and ultimate success.

Tara, Great article! I know many of us are feeling the same way...especially new managers who are trying to do it all alone, and do it the best we can. It is places like this, and Facebook where you can search out information for free, and read all sorts of things to help you in every category imaginable!!

It is refreshing and comforting, at the same time, to know that we are all in the same boat, at one time, or another!!smilies/wink.gif

Very well stated. Yes, we've all been there. You did a great job of putting everything that's racing around in our heads into words.
