Will the Google +1 Button Amount to Anything?

Posted by: Brent Williams

We have begun using the Google +1 button.  Feel free to click on it to test it out yourself.

Social media is still an extremely hot topic among the multifamily crowd, and yet the Google +1 button has gone largely unnoticed.  But in the end, it might have more power than any other social sharing button out there.  The big problem is that many people simply don’t know what it does.  Well, it actually does several key things that you should know about, and will explain why you should potentially implement it on your website.

First, it tells Google that people like a certain page, but more specifically, it tells Google that friends and contacts of yours liked a certain page.  That means when you search for a term, Google is more likely to show a website which your network has +1’d.  And when it does show up, the listing tells the user who liked it from their network.  From an apartment search point of view, that is essentially a resident referral within Google!

Second, when it gets clicked by someone who has an account on Google+, Google’s new social network, that user can share the link on that network, similar to Facebook’s Share button.  Of course, this factor is a big question mark depending on whether Google+ takes off for real, but it’s something to consider.

Right now, it’s too early to tell if there will be any immediate difference in traffic because of the +1 button, but in the long haul, it’s a good bet to go with.  If it were solely tied to Google+, I would have concerns, but as it is tied to Google’s bread and butter search, it’s fair to say it will have some sort of meaningful impact.

Thoughts?  Have you implemented Google’s +1 button on your site?

Hi Brent!

I personally use the +1 button and I think it's great to show people what I've been reading. It's like an RSS feed for a social network - in this case, Google+. Our property websites do not have this button yet, but I guess we should catch up!

I'm getting ready to share a post on marketing trends that we should take advantage of in 2012. I think I'll add this to the list.

Thanks for keeping your content current!

Thanks, Jasmine. I agree - go ahead and throw it up there as soon as you can. As sad as it sounds, it probably has a "popularity" element to it. Right now, a visitor will not expect to see a high number of +1's. But if people wait to implement, it might have a negative look to show a low number, as if saying that people don't really like the content. You don't have to include the number, of course, but it will limit your options.

Implement it now so that you'll have higher numbers later! Ah, that makes sense!

As Google continues its everlasting quest to claim Knighthood over all things digital the +1 button is certainly not to be ignored. I do not have enough metrics to define anything concrete but I am paying attention simply because it's Google. We have the +1 on our blog site and it does have people using it. It may be a bit overwhelming since a good chunk of the industry are still sorting out other digital marketing tools but this is certainly not time to lay down. Great topic Mr Brent.
