I don't have experience on the low income side of things, so can someone clear something up for me? I have a family member who is (fairly) high functioning special needs, so I'm wondering if there are any housing programs other than Section 8 vouchers that we should look into for him. Can you all explain for me?

Here in my little corner of Ohio, we have a county Board of Developmental Disability Services in addition to several non-profit groups. If you have similar organizations in your area, reach out to them. They should be able to provide a list of housing resources. You can also contact your local United Way for other options. Check with family support groups close to you... other folks in similar personal situations will also be great sources of information and referral.

With any sort of housing subsidy, you'll want to make sure your desired housing provider will agree to participate. Not all areas mandate that landlords accept Section 8 vouchers or other types of similar payments.

Hi Brent,
My community works with a local partner specializing in educating and training adults with disabilities, and we can offer housing to several of their clients. Usually when searching for information on programs for people with special needs, you can try the local housing authority, even a senior housing specialist (like COA) and just asking an apartment community if they have any information.

I am familiar with LIHTC in our area. Most take any housing assistance and vouchers, other than Section 8. You might try calling all of the LIHTC communities in your area and ask the manager what agency vouchers or regular monthly assistance they are currently taking, besides Section 8. They should be able to put you in touch with a contact to find out their qualifications.

I would also find an agency that treats or supports the specific "special need" and see if they have a list of agencies that assist with monthly rent on a regular basis.
