I agree with Mindy. Hopefully multi-family property owners and managers, and their suppliers, will become very active with their local apartment association, and build a strong legislative group who will work against these types of ordinances and laws. The Austin and Texas Apartment Associations have been very successful in rolling back or stopping such unfair legislation in their areas. Of course, the National Apartment Association also tries to assist when an issue could become more widespread.
Hummm. Turn about is fair play - if residents don't renew their lease, do they have to pay a non-renewal Fee? Sounds like it is difficult to be a multifamily property owner and/or manager in Portland!
Portland landlords have sued the City of Portland to stop an ordinance that requires landlords who evict tenants without cause to pay moving expenses for the tenants, effective immediately.
The “relocation assistance” ordinance mandates that if a landlord raises the rent on a tenant by more than 10 percent or evicts a tenant without cause, the tenant can then demand the landlord reimburse them for moving costs up to $4,500, according to news reports.
Further demonization of the landlords in the Pacific Northwest, in the same vein as the City Council is pursuing in Seattle.
