Topic: What's your "side hustle?"

With the economy the way it is, many people work two jobs, or supplement their income in some way. Do you have a side job? What is it? What are some you recommend? Did you have one that you hated?

When my kids were little (and I owned a van,) I delivered phone books after work. I could pick up the books, pick up the kids, and walk around with the red wagon to deliver them. My maintenance tech used to be an auto mechanic, so he picks up the occasional weekend brake job. My former assistant had an ebay business. I am a Notary Public, so I make a little extra that way (but I provide Notary services free to my residents.) I also make about $100 a year doing online surveys that pay $3 each. It's not a lot but it's an easy way to enhance my starbucks fund. :)

I'm even considering taking a temp job as Santa's helper. Not because I need a another job, but I think it would be fun. :laugh:

You are so right, many of us have to have that 2nd job to supplement our income, and to afford that Starbucks habit (you know it's bad when you pull up to the bank window and try to order your usual drink, which I did yesterday!). I have an Amazon used book business. It started out as just a way to get rid of the thousands of books my husband and I have collected over the years, but grew into a 2nd full time job. Once I sold my 1st book for a profit I was HOOKED! Now I spend at least part of each day off and many lunch hours combing the local thrift stored for books. My husband lists them, and then we work together to get them sent out. Having just started in March I've already sold enough to have to file taxes. (Just not enough to go back to being a leasing consultant which is my goal for reducing stress in my life :)
My maintenance sup does home inspections on his off hours, and my housekeeper works at Arby's on the weekends. Times are tough so we do what we have to make ends meet...

I have always done things on "the side" and not always for money. I have had a design business for years based solely from word of mouth designing children's spaces: sleep and play and peditrician's/doctor's exam rooms based on "themes." I also have a couple of teacher friends for whom I illustrate their poetry to use in presentations, as well as their classroom bulletin boards. Not to mention, caligraphy for invitations and annoucements. These are more for personal enrichment, I guess. When I needed extra money while my daughter was in college, I also worked as a cleaner nights for an OB-GYN practice. I'm versatile I guess and I like a lot going on, always have and probably always will.

I have had maintenance team members run car repair shops from their houses, remodeling buisnesses and some who are "Flippers" - buying run down properties, fixing them up and either selling them or renting them.

A book business would is a great idea! Individuals selling books is uncommon here because one of the largest used bookstores in the country is here, so everyone sells their books there. I have one rare book I want to sell...but I don't think I'd get what it's worth to me, so it's been locked away in a cupboard for years.

I sell a little bit on ebay, but not for income, just to make money to spend on ebay. ;-)

I wish I had some talent! I'm creative but lack artistry.

My husband does some freelance design too. Mostly graphic design though. He loves it and and does it for fun, but sometimes it pays off too. He did a design for Pepsi a few years ago that they put on 500 million cans (it doesn't pay as much as one would think.) :)

I work with property mangers/apartment owners who through their own independent business can offer tv,internet,phone,wireless,computer support, and energy(in some states) to their renters. They get paid up to 10% on those monthly bills. It is all website driven and they don't have to deal with the contacts. That's between the renter and the service provider. The kicker for many is that when their renter leaves but keeps the service they continue to get paid on that bill.

It's been a nice extra income for many without having to do something different than what they already do.

I had to pick up an emergency jon at Enterprise Rent a Car foe $11.00 an hour after moving from the West Coast to the middle of Kansas. That was kind of rough taking 1/3 of the pay I was used to while being spread so thin on cars and staff that it seemed impossible to get anything done. I guess it is a good direction to launch a career, but not a good place for a professional video producer and marketer that is thirty-years-old. Made me appreciate everything just a little bit more in life when I got out of there.

This is why it's a good idea to have a side hustle...so if you suddenly find your situation unstable, you have a little something to ground you, and some resources for networking too.

Side Hustle that can earn you money! There are one which can earn you money and there are ones which say you can earn money, but they become a pit where you are running and putting out moret than you are taking in. I work on the concept that $1 is better than zero dollars.

I do HealthcareonCall. I do it my way though as I am an Independent Business Partner (IBP). It is Multi-Level-Marketing even though they shy away from the word, but I call it what it is. The deference is how you use it. It is a good group of services and it can earn a person a nice little income. Must people get caught up into the money aspect and mine is hey, you get what you put into it. I work the product and the service and stick with my customers. I use the service myself and it is great and convenient. I go to the weekly cooperate meetings, but I tell the folks I have to not worry about them. They listen in on a couple and then they come back to me and say yes, just give us the things we need, and that is what I do.
