I've heard a wide variation of screening/application fees lately and what's "normal" to charge applicants.

This seems to be state and/or market specific to me.

What are you charging for applications? And who here is electing to cover the fee on behalf of their applicants?

Fee should not exceed costs of conducting the sceeening. If credit check costs $30, then $30 fee. Application fees should be as minimum as possible.

Some areas have laws dictating the max cost for app fees
Some of our regions have increased the fee to try to help pre-qualify applicants
Some of our regions have it at cost to lower the application barrier as much as possible
Most of our properties have a promo code or deal to waive the application fees under certain conditions.
There's a handful of strategy options depending on what the law permits

Here in Virginia we can charge $50 in addition to screening fees but we don't charge the extra
