Building Connection in a Remote World: How We Cultivate Culture at MFI

I've spent over 20 years in this industry, and more than the last decade of that has been as a remote worker across different organizations. Getting remote work culture right can be difficult, and when it all comes together with a great team, it feels a little like magic. We don't do the forced fun of mandatory Zoom happy hours or the hollow "we're a family" corporate speak that makes everyone cringe. MFI and our team are focused on genuine connection where people actually want to show up, where collaboration happens naturally, and where distance doesn't get in the way of real relationships.

At Multifamily Insiders, we've figured out that remote culture isn't aboutrecreating an office online. It's about being deliberate with connection, communication, and celebrating the actual humans behind the screens. We are proud of what we've built and how far we've come, but we're still figuring out parts of it.

Start With Real Communication

Remote work gets lonely fast if you're not careful. We built our culture on transparency and authenticity because they're not optional, they're survival tools. Bring your whole self to work. If your toddler crashes a meeting or you're having a rough day, we want to know.

Vulnerability starts at the top. When leadership is honest and makes space for actual conversations, everyone else feels safer doing the same. We're not auditioning for each other. We're building something real. (Perfection is overrated anyway.)

Want proof this works across continents? Check out our interview with Monique about how we stay connected even when we're literally on opposite sides of the world. Finding Monique was one of the best things that's happened to our team, and we have Revaya to thank for that connection. They specialize in finding exceptional talent from across the world, which opened doors we didn't even know existed. Distance doesn't dilute relationships when you're intentional about building them.

Create Touchpoints That Feel Natural

Scheduled check-ins matter, but spontaneous connection is where the magic happens. We've built in lots of ways to interact that don't feel like obligations:

Quick messages celebrating wins or sharing something interesting we found. Virtual coffee chats about anything except work. Teams chats for pet photos and book recommendations. Team huddles where we solve problems together and people actually listen.

Nobody needs another meeting that should've been an email. We're going for connection that feels easy.

Celebrate Everything Worth Celebrating

Remote teams miss out on the organic celebrations. The high-five after landing a client. The impromptu lunch when a project wraps. We've gotten creative.

When someone does great work, we say so. Publicly. Whether it's a killer event, a smart contribution, or going out of your way for a teammate. We don't save recognition for annual reviews. Real-time appreciation matters.

Keep Learning Together

Professional development doesn't stop when everyone's remote. Actually, itgets better. Our team can jump into webinars, hit virtual conferences, connect with industry leaders from their couch.

We learn from each other, too. Articles get shared. Trends get discussed. Everyone teaches what they're passionate about. Some of our best conversations about where the industry is going started as casual chats.

Trust Your People

You cannot micromanage your way to a good remote culture. Period. We hire smart people, and then we step back. Outcomes matter. Hours logged on a computer don't.

Flexibility runs both ways. When we need someone for a last-minute call or urgent project, they show up because we've shown up for them when life happened during business hours.

Protect What Matters

Remote work isn't about being always on. It's about being present when it counts and disconnecting when you need to. We push our team to set boundaries, take actual breaks, and protect their personal time and mental health.

We're building careers, relationships, and a community that genuinely cares. Not just a company.

What We're Still Learning

We don't have this figured out. (Anyone who says they do is trying to sell you something.) Our remote culture continues to evolve based on what our team needs. We ask for feedback. We try new things. We ditch what doesn't work.

Here's what I'm sure of: distance doesn't equal disconnection. With intention, authenticity, and actually seeing each other as complete humans, you can build something that thrives.

At Multifamily Insiders, we're living proof. You can create meaningful connections, do impactful work, and build something special when "together" means different time zones and home offices.

The joy comes from how we've chosen to show up for each other.
