What goes into Employee Background Checks: The OFAC Patriot Act Search

Snap66  Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Congress passed the lengthily named “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act,” commonly known as the “Patriot Act.”  This piece of legislation was aimed at arming law enforcement with tools to both detect and prevent acts of terrorism.  While the Patriot act has had both supporters and nay-sayers, it has become of great value to employers.  One of the services included in theRRD’s employment screening packages is the OFAC Patriot Act Search.  This tool screens for individuals and groups associated with terrorism.  By screening your employees with this service, you’re helping to prevent potential terrorists from receiving an income for their terrorist activities.  You’re also helping to ensure the safety of your own employees. History Of OFAC During the administration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977, Congress enacted the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This law authorizes the president to regulate commerce after declaring a national emergency in response to any unusual or extraordinary threat to the United States from a foreign source. The provisions of IEEPA are administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the Department of the Treasury, which publishes a list of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries. It also lists individuals, groups, and entities, such as terrorists and narcotics traffickers designated under programs that are not country-specific.  Collectively, such individuals and companies are called Specially Designated Nationals (SDN......

The Effect of Homelessness on Children

There is no shortage of reasons to fight homelessness. And as we come up on National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week (Nov. 11-19th), it is important to showcase just how homelessness impacts our world – the communities in which we work and live. Among the most important: its often-devastating impact on children and teenagers. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) annual Point-in-Time count, more than one-fifth of the nearly 550,000 people experiencing homelessness on an evening in January 2016 were children (under the age of 18). Over the course of a year, more than 2 million U.S. kids will experience at least one period of homelessness, the non-profit organization Covenant House Institute says. Living on the street can lead to serious consequences for our youth, whether they are homeless with a family or on their own. Some of the effects include: Being prone to hunger When homeless, access to food can be extremely difficult to come by. According to a study by Covenant House, 57 percent of homeless kids spend at least one day every month without food. Inadequate nutrition in turn can have negative impacts on brain development and a child's physical growth. Poor mental health Being homeless puts children at significant risk for a whole host of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and low self-esteem, says a report by the National Network for Youth. Exacerbating the impact of these conditions is the fact that so few homeless youth will be able to ac......

The Three Ps of Amazing Customer Service

The Three Ps of Amazing Customer Service
I was recently in Miami staying at the Fountainbleu Hotel for a conference. Located in the heart of Millionaire’s Row, the hotel is smack dab in the middle of a spit of land with the Atlantic ocean on one side and the bay on the other. The room was gorgeous, and I spent quality time on the private balcony enjoying the views of both bay and ocean.   Accommodations aside, what really impressed me was how The Fontainbleau seemed aggressively involved in the customer journey and experience. They crushed it in the three Ps; Place, People and Post-Experience.   The Place. The instant you walk in the experience begins. In the air throughout the hotel is the faint (but definitely perceptible) scent of flowers and, strangely, what seems to be suntan lotion. They use ScentAir products and have a signature Fountainbleu scent. The smell evokes the beach and reminds you that you should be out there soaking up the sun. I’m using my imagination about the sun part as it was raining with thunder storms and extremely hot and humid.   The People. Every single person was exceptionally customer-focused. From the porter to the shop clerks to the concierge, my every need was anticipated and handled.   The Post Experience. I reviewed the hotel on Facebook and within two hours, I had received a personal thank you and they asked me about any special memories of my stay. From start to finish, it was extraordinary.   Wouldn’t it be great if every......

The Time For Change Is Now

If you are looking for the right time to make positive change in your life, now is that time! Don’t get me wrong, it's a good way to kick off the New Year but why wait!    Making a resolution is the same as setting a goal, there’s no reason to wait for the stars to align before acting, just go for it!   Like many of you, I have many goals that I’ve already started to push forward with (some of them have me in a lot of pain right now). I’ve enjoyed talking about resolution goals with others, however; I'm surprised at the number of people who have simply stopped making resolutions for the simple perspective that they will not be successful.     Sometimes we fail when trying to make better decisions or implement positive change but that’s no reason not to try. If you have a history of not reaching your goals, at least you have a history of goals and that should never change. Therefore; my recommendation is to keep pushing forward! If you need to start with small goals and work your way up, go for it.   I’ve got 3 tips for positive change and you don't have to wait until the new year to get started. Maybe you could incorporate one or all of them with your plans for a prosperous year.   1. Self-Awareness: If you can easily find reasons to not be successful, ask yourself if your reasons have a solution. To be truly successful we are going t......

5 Vital Questions To Ask Yourself When You Are Stuck

5 Vital Questions To Ask Yourself When You Are Stuck
Have you ever been cruising through life, when all of a sudden, you hit a wall? I experienced this feeling of being stuck shortly after the Great Recession of 2008.  My business and life were both in the midst of an upheaval, and I began to question my purpose in life. I decided to take massive action and enroll in Life Coaching School at IPEC (Institute For Professional Excellence In Coaching), and was presented with these five vital questions during the training:     What do you want? What frustrates you about your life/business? What would it take to double your business? What have you tried and not tried? What is the number one thing you are trying to accomplish?   What do you want? This may seem like a fairly easy question to answer, but I will guarantee you that if you ask most people what they want, they will quickly proceed to tell you what they DON’T want. Therein lies the enormous problem. Most people’s focus is on what they don’t want, and any successful person learns that what you focus on is what grows in your life. It may appear to be a simple question, but once you can address the question, answers will begin pouring out. Let me give you a personal example.  During the time I became disgruntled with my business, I kept telling myself that I did not want to continue down the same path. I knew what I didn’t want, to work at the restaurant. What was it that I ......

The Importance of Volunteering and Charity Work

The Importance of Volunteering and Charity Work
Giving back to the community should be a part of every apartment company's operations. To begin with, it is simply the right thing to do. However, a commitment to philanthropy can have other powerful benefits as well.  Increasingly, employees and residents are seeking relationships with apartment firms that exhibit a commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) Therefore, providing ways for team members to volunteer and perform charity work can have powerful effects on employee morale and make your company more appealing to prospects, residents and investors. Here is a range of ways your company can help your employees give back: Paid time off to volunteerProviding employees with paid time off to volunteer for an organization or a cause of their choice shows that you care about the surrounding community, and that you care about your associates as people. It shows you want to support their passions and that you view them as more than just an employee. Group volunteer outings A company's charitable efforts can also incorporate group outings, in which associates work together to give back to a particular organization.   At ROSS, our associates have participated in group volunteer events at Fisher House Foundation and The Childrens’ Inn at NIH. We have orchestrated spring cleanups of facilities, provided meals for families, prepared gift baskets for residents, and coordinated a Wish List Drive so that our residents and employees can contribute needed items. Gift matchingSome apartment companies have implemented gift-matching programs to encourage employees' charitable donations. Employers typically provide a dollar-for-dollar m......

Delivery Madness: Are you ready for Prime time?

Many who deal with package management on a daily basis breathed a hefty sigh of relief in January. The holiday season had passed, which presumably meant it’d be another 12 months before another rush of that magnitude. Well, hold on a minute; there are a few hidden holidays that impact the number of packages delivered but what about “self-created” holidays? Prime Day is Prime Time One wouldn’t think a self-created holiday would create such mayhem. Well, unless that holiday is all about packages. Introducing the third annual Amazon Prime Day, which absolutely fits that billing.  Delivery carriers and managers are advised to gear up for this one, which begins at 9 p.m. ET on July 10. Amazon hypes the event as a “one-day only global shopping event for Prime members.” It’s essentially an online version of Black Friday, and you better believe it makes an impact. The e-Commerce giant launched its second ever Amazon Prime Day on July 12, 2016, and it resulted in the biggest sales day ever for the online retail giant, according to CNBC. Amazon declined to disclose how many people signed up for Prime to participate in the sale, but U.S. orders rose by more than 50 percent compared to the first Prime Day a year earlier. Now that Prime Day is fairly established, it’s a reasonable expectation that the numbers will continue to rise. Last year, our customers experienced a 30-percent increase of package deliveries two days after Prime Day. Here’s hypothesizing that the increase will be even sharper t......

Creating a Culture of Success: Part One

Creating a Culture of Success: Part One
Peter: “The thing is Bob, it’s not that I’m lazy…it’s that I just don’t care!” The Bobs: “Don’t care???” Peter: “It’s a problem of motivation…” From: “Office Space” _______________ If you’ve watched the movie Office Space you know that Peter is NOT happy at his job! He’s done dealing with a corporate environment filled with “TPS reports,” fax cover sheets and reporting to eight different bosses. Now, he’s so over it that he’s just doing enough “not to get fired!” Doesn’t sound like a culture designed for success, does it? The sad part is this doesn’t just happen in a movie-it happens in the workplace, every single day. Gallup says that 70% of employees are disengaged-and that disengagement costs companies $2,000 per employee! YIKES! For multifamily housing companies creating a high-performance/high-engagement culture is so important because this industry burns people out. I mean, how many times have you thought about quitting, or tried to quit the multifamily industry? I know I tried a few times in my career to leave the industry and I definitely thought about it many, many times, because there were so many times I felt it just wasn’t worth it.  ManagInc just released it’s 2017 Benchmark Study on “Corporate Social Responsibility and the Multifamily Industry” and within the report are two statistics indicating that while the average national employee turnover rate is 19% (2016 SHRM Human Capital Report), within the multifamily housing industry the turnover rate is 32% (National Apartment Association.)  Multifamily housing is NOT for the weak! And as leaders in this industry it’s crucial that you recog......
