Google Local – How does your business become a “Favorite Place”?

Favorite PlaceApparently it pays to optimize your Google Local listings.  I received a letter from Google this week advising me that J.C. Hart Company, Inc. is one of the most popular local businesses on Google.  This was measured by how many times people found our business listings and clicked on them for more information.  According to the letter less than 1% of all U.S. businesses receive this recognition.  So this is pretty cool.  We got a nifty window sticker and everything.  Have you claimed your listings on Google for all your properties?  Create a Google account for your business today and start claiming your locations and updating the information.  You’ll be shocked at how many people search for your property by name directly on Google, and how claiming these can be huge for you.

Congrats, Mark! Did you all do anything special with your listing to get more exposure, or did it just come organically? Any tips specifically with the listing you can share?

The main thing I did was update them all at the beginning of the year. Google has updated their local space and by updating your listing you'll also get analytics for them. So if you haven't looked at them in the last 6 months or so, go back in and do it. Fill them out in their entirety. Google likes stuff that is filled out in full and it can help boost your search ranking (especially locally). Finally, be sure to add pictures, and if you have video include that as well in the listing.

Basically, put some time into it and revisit the listing is my advice.
