That lesson didn't come from a book. 📚
It came from experience. A lot of it. 😅
Post-COVID, I noticed a shift in interviews. 👀
Candidates sounded perfect. 🎯
They knew the buzzwords. 🗣️
They crushed scenario questions. 💥
They could talk circles around "best practices." 🧠
But once in role… something was off. 🚩
❌ Resistance to feedback
😐 A quiet "that's not my job" energy
📉 Little interest in learning the actual role
🤷 Zero instinct to be part of a team
They weren't bad people.
They just weren't the right fit for the culture, the property, or the moment. 🏢🧭
And that's when it clicked for me. 💡
The miss wasn't performance.
The miss was alignment. 🎯
So I changed how I interview. 🔄
🧠 Here's the shift that changed everything for me:
Most interviews test what someone knows.
I realized I needed to test how they show up. 🚪✨
Now, one question carries more weight than almost anything else:
👉 "Walk me through how you would train a brand-new, green employee on a core task. Start from the moment you meet them."
This question reveals everything. 👀🧠
The performer jumps straight to procedures. 📋
The builder does something different. 🛠️
🧩 They listen first. Ask what the person already knows.
🧭 They explain the why, not just the steps.
🏠 They connect the task to a resident's experience.
🤝 They model it. "Watch me. Then we'll do it together."
🛡️ They create safety. "Your questions are welcome. Mine were too."
At that point, it's no longer about skill.
It's a blueprint for character. 🧬
✨ The honest truth:
I'm a training manager at heart. ❤️
I can teach systems. ⚙️
I can teach process. 🗂️
I can teach policy. 📖
But I cannot teach:
✨ Curiosity about other people
✨ Coachability
✨ Positivity under pressure
✨ The instinct to lift the team, not just themselves
When I started hiring for that… everything changed. 🦄✨
We didn't just hire employees.
We hired culture carriers. 🌱
People who stayed. 🔒
People who grew. 📈
People residents trusted. 🏠
People teams rallied around. 🤍
👇 Your turn:
Think about your best hire ever. 💭
Was it their resume… or a moment that made you say, "This is the one"? 🎯
Now think about a hiring regret. 😬
Was there a quiet hesitation you ignored about how they might treat others?
💬 What's one question you'll add to your next interview to find the builder, not just the performer?
Let's stop hiring for paper. 📄
Let's start hiring for people. ❤️🦄

This is so true! We've just learned the hard way just how true this is.
