ποΈ Service with Sass, Heart, and a Hint of Otis' Cookies ποΈ
Let's talk customer serviceβyou know, that thing our industry used to be legendary for? ππ½ββοΈπ
When I first started in property management (back when dinosaurs roamed, flip phones ruled, and fax machines screeched like banshees π π¦π), we didn't have AI or fancy dashboards. What we did have were balloons π, Otis Spunkmeyer cookies πͺ (the kind that made the whole leasing office smell like heaven but would melt your fingerprints off if you touched the oven π¬π₯), and the absolute power of personal connection π€.
You greeted every prospect like they were walking into the Ritz. You knew their name before they reached the door. You noted their dog's name on the app and asked about it during the tour. THAT was the gold standard. And you know what? It worked. π―
Then came COVID. And with it, plexiglass barriers, masked hellos π·, and a necessary shift to safety and distance. But somewhere along the wayβ¦ we lost the spark. The in-person connection became an afterthought. The "experience" part of resident experience started sounding more like a task and less like a joy.
π‘ So I said to my managers: LET'S BRING IT BACK. π€π¬
We picked up "The Nordstrom Way to Customer Experience Excellence" as our team book. Not just to read it and nod politely. No, noβwe made it a mission. We unpacked it. We discussed it in our meetings. We tied it back to how we do things in multifamily. I even created a custom workbook to go with it. Yes, I said workbook. Because we don't just readβwe APPLY. πͺπ½π§
This workbook is full of:
π Reflection prompts
𧩠Real-life industry examples
π Ways to empower your teams
π― Challenges to complete at your own properties
π¬ Space to reflect, improve, and grow
We used it to re-train our focus on what makes people feel valuedβfrom the front gate to the follow-up email. I saw managers take real steps. Like:
β¨ Letting leasing agents make decisions without getting a dozen approvals.
β¨ Reducing all the "rules" that block us from giving residents the YES they need.
β¨ Creating recognition programs that actually mean something.
And the best part?
π₯ I'm giving this workbook away to you. For free. No email required. No sales pitch coming later. No strings, just service.
Because if we're not lifting each other up and sharing what's workingβwhat are we even doing? π
Let's get back to doing what we do best:
βοΈ Welcoming.
βοΈ Surprising.
βοΈ Delighting.
βοΈ LEADING with HEART. β€οΈ
Drop a π¬ if you've had your own "burned cookie moment" in this biz. Share what YOU'RE doing to bring the sparkle back to the customer experience.
Because property management isn't just about buildings. It's about PEOPLE. And the way we make them feel? That's the legacy. π
