Communicate Better With Residents by Speaking Their Language
“Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.”   Do you remember this line from the movie Good Morning, Vietnam? In this scene, Conrad Adenauer, a wise-cracking disc-jockey (played by Robin Williams) sarcastically responds to a meeting from a superior officer that is full of Army jargon, with a jargon-laced comment of his own. It was a brilliant example of how we can get so caught up in our own “languages” that can forget that sometimes other people don’t speak the languages we do.     PCS-ing??   The Good Morning, Vietnam scene reminds me of a common occurrence I would have when I worked at a community in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There is a large military presence in Colorado Springs, so, we would get lots of calls from prospects who were being transferred to the area with the military.    When I first started in the community (I was an assistant manager, then) I had not really worked with military clientele before and was not used to the language and jargon our military uses. For example a call may sound something like this,    “Hi...my husband and I are PCS-ing and we’re trying to find something within our BAH that is close to post... ”   As a lifelong civilian I had no idea what was being said!
