What Apartment Leasing can learn from a classic 90's Rom-Com

Youve-Got-Mail Waiting for the internet to connect

"You've Got Mail"

It's one of my all time favorites. The classic "You've Got Mail." The holiday-season beloved rom-com starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

It's a wonderful holiday themed love story. Featuring the old dial up internet and first versions of email.

It also offers powerful lessons in business and the power of human connection. Lessons that translate easily into apartment leasing. Or any business.

In one standout scene, Kathleen Kelly, (Meg) is faced with no cash in a cash only line.

But, suave Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) slides over and in a simple, yet meaningful moment, asks for a name. And then something unfolds. He shows the power of getting and using someone's name.

That one small action transforms an awkward exchange into a genuine connection. And positive resolution.

And in leasing, that's exactly what we aim to do every day.

💡 Using someone's name isn't just polite, it's powerful. It signals respect, warmth, and attention. Here's how to apply it:

  • Personal Connection: Use the prospect's name during phone calls, emails, text replies and in person. During the initial introduction and throughout the tour. It creates instant rapport.
  • Comfort & Trust: Saying someone's name softens the interaction and makes them feel seen. When people trust, they'll move forward.
  • Engagement: Reference their name naturally during closing opportunities or asking questions. It offers a natural connection, making it easier for them to answer.
  • Memorability: People remember how you make them feel. And hearing their name makes your tour memorable.

There's a few more "You've Got Mail" scenes that are great business moments. Each one packed with warmth, humor, and timeless takeaways that remind us:

💖 Connection always wins over sales.
