As leaders we need to understand that there's a difference between being smart & being wise. A smart person knows the right things to say, while a wise person knows when it's best to stay quiet. It's all about understanding the impact of our words & knowing when silence speaks volumes. Let's strive to be both smart & wise in our conversations!

Spring is the perfect time to bring your apartment community together for some low-cost, high-fun events. Here are a few ideas to get you started: 1. Outdoor movie night: Set up a screen in the courtyard or by the pool and have a movie night under the stars. Ask residents to bring their own blankets and snacks to share, you have plenty of beverages for a cozy evening of cinema. 2. Potluck picnic: Organize a community potluck in a nearby park or g ...

Trust vs Control as a leader ~~ Control is about doing things right, while trust is about doing the right things. Over-reliance on control might yield short-term results, however, it often leads to disengagement, stifled creativity, and a bottleneck where leaders become overly involved in every decision.
Trusting your team to make the right decisions can create a more positive and innovative work environment. It's important to find the right...

In my world ~ good leaders CREATE safe work environments! To create a psychologically safe work environment, show your team that you are open to new ideas. In meetings, ask questions before posing answers & reward those who speak up by thanking them for their input or following up with additional queries. Consider all viewpoints when brainstorming solutions to difficult problems & make sure your team knows that there is no such thing as a... Show more

When was the last time you called all of your team together, just to say thank you and to say something that you are grateful for about each one of them individually?

Mike Powers Every week informally. Every two weeks as part of bi weekly business operations reviews.
If any manager can't find a positive acknowledgement for something well done by each team member either manager is ungrateful or employee is beyond help.

Gerry Hunt Mike YAY!! If a manager can't find something positive, perhaps she/he has only been trained to see the negative.

Mike Powers Gerry Hunt tragically, the vintage style was management by exception. The negatives received attention. It took 20-30 years to move to focus and recognize success positives as the priority.

Guest Insider Pardon my ignorance. I'm just curious. Couldn't a wildlife conservation come in, or a game warden, gather them and relocate them somewhere safe?

Gerry Hunt However bears live all over my mountains. They are not aggressive, when we learn to live WITH THEM. They are safe here. My residents know to not feed them and leave them also.

My residents come into the office often, especially since the Hurricane. One of them came up with the idea for this board. I love it.

I think EVERYONE in the Corporate Office needs to spend one week every quarter onsite!

Amanda Gunn I love this. Last summer, our maintenance team at one property was drowning. I offered to come walk move-outs for them. It was such a refresher for me. i remembered how painfully long the process was, but I saw how much longer it had become. We were able to take what I learned and start improving the process. It really does help the team collaborate.

Kalyn Schutz Lot’s of great comments here! My contention is that those who have never worked on site should not make decisions for those that do, particularly without site team input - because there is a basic ignorance of site operations in the real world. And for those who have worked onsite and moved onto the freedom of the greener pastures of HQ - don’t forget the reality of what being on site is like and please attempt to bring sanity (and some dignity/trust). Do not turn your heads in forgetful bliss or with disdainful huffs of disbelief when your report was not submitted on time by the CM (like it never happened to you while running the circus…tsk, tsk).

With that, yes, HQ needs to work - in an active role and without assistance - for no less than two weeks. More is better to experience a full monthly or quarterly cycle. Sit in the chair, walk in the shoes, and keep up the pace - same level of expectations and results - with those who live, breathe, and eat daily site ops. This is not to say...

The task of rebuilding after the flood, the wind & the landslides is daunting ~~ we are facing it with determination & hope. Every hand, every heart is coming together to clear the wreckage & rebuild not just structures, but LIVES. Folks are working tirelessly, shoulder to shoulder, with neighbors who before, were just faces & have now become partners in this effort. We are not just clearing the pathways & reconstructing, we are transforming, shaping a future of resilience, love & unity. It's hard work, but it's important work. Folks are choosing to rebuild, to create a city that rises stronger & more united than ever before. Folks are building a future filled with stories of love, caring, community & resilience. To see the destruction in person is so different than seeing pictures. My emotions are still raw. I have a hard time sleeping. Thank you all for the out pouring of love that you have shown to me. Thank you all for the many donations that you have sent. They are being used, here, on the ground, helping folks. You may donate through paypal or Zelle. My email is ruthie61@hotmail.com

I read a quote somewhere that said ‘Your job might be special and a privilege, but it’s not what makes YOU special’!
Somewhere, over the years, I have realized that it is not healthy to have so much of our self worth tied up in something, like our job, that is essentially a means to an end ~ it is not WHO we are!
KNOW that your job is NOT your reason for being. KNOW that you have value with or without a job! Let's all learn to live in the...

Kara Rice Gerry, YES! Or as Toni Morrison put it, in a lesson she learned from her father:
1. Whatever the work is, do it well—not for the boss but for yourself.
2. You make the job; it doesn’t make you.
3. Your real life is with us, your family.
4. You are not the work you do; you are the person you are.
