A Tech Trend Your Residents Want Will Benefit You Too

You can’t always get what you want. But sometimes you can. We all know that residents want luxury amenities and home automation capabilities, yet those same residents also want to live within a means that may not align with their high-dollar desires. Don’t blame your residents, blame human nature. Who doesn’t want a few bells and whistles to make life more pleasing? Internet TV access? Yes please! Automated lighting, temperature control and sound system? Why, don’t mind if I do! While these features could really help rent a unit, they come at a very real cost that either you or your resident must absorb. Don’t dash your amenities dream just yet. Some conveniences, like tech-forward smart locks, are both desirable and doable. Here’s why:

Smart locks are convenient.

In a society whose thumb is always on its smartphone, using this ever-present gadget as a door key just makes sense. To unlock their doors, residents simply use their smartphone or smart credential to lock or unlock their door, and in they go. Goodbye cumbersome keys!

Smart locks come with a side of prestige.

If convenience doesn’t sell your residents, cool tech will. Smart locks are a part of the smart home package that residents aspire to have (and brag about).

Smart locks give you back your time and money.

Smart locks can be managed without you physically having to walk there and visit them in person. That’s right. No more touring. No more managing locksmiths. No more expensive key management systems either. Smart locks are a clever way to add distinction to your property, while also helping to control operating costs. Now that’s a smart investment.

Smart locks are more secure.

The strongest security is smart security. It’s true. Plus, smart locks give facility staff the ability to view a history of access, receive alerts, add and track users, and more. No traditional lock system can come close to offering that kind of security or convenience.

They plug right into existing software.

The good ones do anyway. Smart locks with an open architecture design easily integrate into existing third-party access management software. This simplifies operations and helps staff work more efficiently every day.

See? Your residents may not always get what they want, but sometimes they can—if you’re smart about it.

Is there a certain brand or lock system you recommend?

Also, while I definitely agree with most of the benefits you listed, I don't know if I'd stop touring even if we upgraded to smart locks. Are you proposing that prospects could just go in and tour themselves? I see that as a risk for theft. Also that time of touring is a key time for the leasing agents to build a rapport and sell the community. I wouldn't want to lose out on that key sales time. Your thoughts?

Hi Kristen,

Thanks so much for your inquiry! Schlage actually offers a variety of advanced keyless solutions for renters as well as homeowners, including the new Schlage Control Smart Locks with ENGAGE Technology. Specifically designed for multi-family properties, Schlage Control Smart Locks play a major role in providing access control for resident entrances, while reducing time on maintenance and overall management costs.

While we realize that tour time is key for leasing agents, Schlage’s no-tour functionality and smart credentials do give the option and convenience to eliminate the need for property managers to manage keys. You can find additional information at 844-630-0780.

This is a great trend, but the one objection I run into occasionally is those residents without access to smartphones. They either don't want to or can't upgrade to one, and still want/need a physical keyed lock.

So be sure you're not installing full-building without communicating!
