Celebrate Pride 2023 with Me!

Celebrate Pride 2023 with Me!

June is widely recognized as Pride Month, a time when the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies come together to celebrate diversity, equality, and love.  As your resident Queer, I would be thrilled if you would join me in highlighting a cause close to my heart.  This is a topic that I'm sure you can all relate to: housing!

Housing is something so many of us take for granted- we grumble about rent prices or the HOA or how much we hate our neighbors.  Despite the LONG list of things, I could complain about, I am also profoundly grateful that I am not without a home. Even though the dishwasher doesn't work, and my bedroom gets waaayyy too much morning sunlight, it still gives me a space where it is safe to be myself. It would be terrifying to lack this space - to have threats from strangers and mother nature regularly intrude. Even more unimaginable is having to struggle to be safe as a child- a time when the biggest worry about life should be the math test next week. Yet, for so many kids in the U.S that is the reality- some, not even out of middle school- struggle to find their next meal, a safe place to rest, and an adult that they can trust.

There are approximately 1.6 to 2.8 million homeless youth in the United States. Did you know that LGBTQIA+ youth are 120% more likely to be houseless than their straight and cis peers? It is estimated that up to 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQIA+, despite comprising only 7-10% of the general youth population.  Conservatively there are 400,000 gay, trans, and Queer homeless youth in the United States.

The problem is vast and affects more than just Queer kidsso you may ask "Why focus on them and not all homeless youth?". It is a great question, especially if you are not familiar with the harsh realities for LGBTQIA+ youth. Multiple factors contribute to the housing disparity for Queer youth: family rejection, discrimination in public and in school systems, and a lack of social support. Sadly, many LGBTQIA+ youth experience hostility or even violence in their homes, leading them to flee in search of safety and acceptance.

Houselessness exposes Queer youth to numerous physical, mental, and emotional risks. Without stable housing, they face an increased likelihood of engaging in high-risk behaviors such as substance abuse, survival sex work, and involvement in the criminal justice system. The absence of a support network can exacerbate feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety, leading to mental health challenges that hinder personal growth and well-being. Moreover, homeless LGBTQIA+ youth often encounter discrimination and violence on the streets, further deepening their vulnerability.

As we celebrate Pride Month, it is crucial to remember that the fight for equality extends beyond parades, parties, and rainbow washed logos. LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness face unique challenges that demand our attention, compassion, and action.

So, this June please join Multifamily Insiders and me in donating to True Colors United. True Colors United is a national nonprofit focusing on helping homeless youth, with particular focus on LGBTQIA+ youth. They can make a HUGE difference in these kids' lives while bringing long lasting change. Together we can create a world where every young person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has a safe and nurturing place to call home. Let this Pride Month be a catalyst for lasting change and a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and support for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community!

It is heartbreaking to hear these stats, and understand that behind each "stat" is a real person who struggles with things that many of us take for granted. Thank you for sharing, Andi, and I'm excited that we can help support this cause!
