Topic: On-site office?

I wonder at times how other properties are managed and I love that I found this site. I have a few questions I'm hoping some will share their experiences.

I manage 4 small properties that are all in different areas, but in the same county, so they are close. We have an office off-site and recently our company was bought out. The new owners want us on-site, but my fear is never having a moment to get work done. I'm already on call 24/7 and so in maintenance. We have no other staff but us.
SO, here are my questions:

Do you work on-site? if so how do you balance tenant time with other work that needs done? Is it uncommon to put a sign on your door saying appointment only so that I am not constantly disturbed?

Do others compensated for being on call?

All of our Property Managers work on-site, so the day to day does get a little hectic. However, they have other on-site team members, Leasing Consultants, Business Managers..... to help with resident visits.
